Underwater habitat box
Salt dough or other clay that dries hard
Large box
Saran Wrap
Beads
Paint (tempera)
Clear Thread (Quilters, preferably) or fishing line
Plastic Plants (like you use in a fish tank)
Spray paint in dark blue or black
Glue
Sea Shells or starfish (opt.)
Sand (opt.)
Begin by having the children decide what sea creatures to make and find
pictures in books. I'll tell you how we made a few of the ones in our box.
Octopus: Using the clay shape the head and roll out the eight arms and attach
to the head, work the details in by using your fingers or knife to press the
lines in along the legs. You can even put the suckers on the bottom of the
legs if you have something small enough to press in and shape around. We
used two huge pearl-like beads for the eyes. Before setting it aside to dry
take a needle and the thread and run some threads through the legs and head.
We ran it through the whole leg on just a couple of legs and knotted it on
the bottom. The number of threads you need to support it will depend on the
size you make it. Let it dry then paint it with tempera paint.
Dolphin: Shape with clay, forming fins and tail. Don't forget the blowhole.
We used tiny beads for the eyes. And don't forget to run you thread through
before it dries
The other fish and mammals are pretty much the same, just have the kids look
around the house to come up with things to use for the animals.
Cut a large circle out of one side of the box this will be the hole you look
in to see your underwater scene and then paint the inside of the box using
the spray paint ( You can also spray the outside to make it look nice). Let
dry. Make sure you can still open the box.
Using the boxes natural opening, take a piece of saranwrap and cover the
circular hole, you can decorate the outside of the box around the hole to
look like a porthole.
Arrange your animals and plants inside the box. Use the threads to hang your
animals from the top of the box, adjusting them at different heights. You
can look through the "porthole" to see where you want them. You can add
anything else (shells, rocks, sand, etc) you might have to the box to complete
the scene. Let the children be creative with this.. ie, hide a stingray in
the sand.
We had alot of fun with this project and you can rearrange the box over and
over. You can use the same idea, but put other scenes in it.. maybe a jungle
scene.
